DHCP only gives 192.168.122.x IP addresses.?

Question

I have a Belkin Wireless N+ F5D8235-4 v1000 router. It is set to DHCP. I have 1 computer, classic Xbox, and VOIP phone hardwired into it, and a two computers which connect wirelessly. For some reason it only gives out 192.168.122.x IP addresses. It is extremely frustrating because some websites block that address range. I have to manually set my computers/Xbox to static IP's with 192.168.2.x numbers and they work fine. But I want it to stop issuing the 122 numbers entirely.

In the LAN Setup section of the router config it shows the IP Pool Addresses starting at 192.168.2.2 and ending at 192.168.2.100. To my understanding that means it SHOULD already be giving the 192.168.2.x numbers, but obviously it's not.

No websites should ever see a 192.168.x.x IP address. Those are reserved for local networks, not the Internet. In fact, ALL websites should reject them.



Routers by their nature deal with two networks: your local network and the Internet (actually, your ISP's network). The DHCP the router maintains is strictly on your network; your ISP runs its own assignment of your IP address with it.

Your question is a little unclear. If you're asking "Does the DHCP server on my Windows 2000 give the IP addresses to my 8 computers?" Then yes. That is the function of a DHCP server. You didn't mention what is connecting the 8 computers to the Windows 2000 machine. Is it a router? A switch? If you're asking "Will the switch help assign IP addresses?", then No. A switch wont help. A router can also act as a DHCP server as well (at least the retail ones like Linksys and Netgear). As far as the computers dropping the drives (I assume network drives), it could possibly be a loose connector. Always start on the phsycial layer before trying to solve the probelm. If all cables are secure, then make sure that your PC's aren't trying to reconnect or constantly renew their IP addresses via the DHCP server.

What is the netmask of the Belkin LAN? With 192.168.2.x IP, netmask 255.255.255.0, the 192.168.122.x IP's should not be able to get internet through the Belkin (unless its netmask is 255.255.0.0).



Does it work any differently if the VOIP box is not connected (does it maybe also have a DHCP server)?

Sounds like you have another computer or even the voip adapter giving out a second DHCP setting. Check to make sure ICS is not on any computer. Also check to see and make sure the phone adapter has only one ethernet cord coming out of the Wan of the phone adapter to one of the four lan ports on the back of your router.
