my grandpa thinks i gave his computer a virus through the Wifi Router?

Question

I have a laptop that i use in my room and i connect to the internet via a wireless router that is connected to the main desktop computer in the living room. well, anyway the main desktop computer is the one my grandpa uses and it got infectect with a virus. Now he's blaming it on me saying that the wifi router gave his computer a virus because of the websites i go to on my laptop. the funny thing is i dont have virus or anything on my laptop and i continue to use the same wifi router and nothing seems to be wrong, everthing works the same. so i want to know if it possible for my laptop to transmitt a virus through the wireless router and infect my grandpa's desktop computer without affecting my laptop at all?
oh and by the way, there are no security enabled features set up on the wifi router, all the settings for the wireless router are on default

Yes it is possible that your laptop passed on a virus. Some viruses will seek out any other computers on the same network to infect. Both of your computers will be part of the same workgroup on the same network (This is a default setting in Windows. You didn't have to set this up, or even know about it) so if one of your computers gets a virus that can scan for other computers, then both computers could get it. It's pretty rare, though.



There is one very simple way to check if you did. If YOUR LAPTOP has the virus then you may have passed it on. If you don't have the virus then there is absolutely no way that you could have done so.

Although viruses can travel around a network, even a wifi one, you should have had an indication of it on your machine before he did. I've never heard of a virus that was so surreptitious that it stayed hidden on the first machine until it had infected the rest of the network.



Has your anti-virus announced it had discovered something on your machine?

He probably opened up a bad email or went to a bad site. I would say download some software like AVG and Spybot to get rid of the virus. If you help him get rid of it you might be able to convince him you understand viruses and know you didn't put it on there.



I have had AVG for a year and haven't had a virus.

He would have to have accessed a website that was infected himself to to get his computer infected. Is his computer protected with anti-virus software? If not better get some.

You can not affect his machine. He must have opened something or gone to a bad site to infect his own machine.
