So, on the server PC, once you have run dcpromo, selected new forest, installed the DNS server, selected static or dynamic ip in other workds once you have installed an active directory domain and a dns server what do you do then.

How do you connect the PC's on the newtork(well just switch just now) to the domain, do you go into each PC and just add the domain name in computer settings or do you add the PC to the domain from the server, i.e in AD?

First, make sure that the DHCP server uses the domain controller's address as the DNS/WINS server address. You can even use the domain controller as the DHCP server which tends to simplify things.

Second, all you have to do to join the computers to the domain is to do the same thing as you would to change the workgroup, and instead of assigning a new workgroup, click domain.

Now, how are you storing profiles, and do you need the local profiles migrated to the DC?

You go to each individual PC and join it to the domain. As the other poster said, make sure each 'client' PC's DNS information points to the domain controller(s). that is the IP address of the DNS server on the client should be the same as the servers IP address. Then go into system properties and look for a button to 'rename this computer of change its domain or workgroup'. Click that and use an admin level username and password to join the domain. If the client says it can't find the domain, then somethings wrong with either the clients DNS info, or the DNS service on the server. Make sure the server and/or client firewall isn't interfering either. The client PC should then show up in AD.

You need to make sure that all your clients DNS settings in the network card are pointing to the DC.

You add them manually where you rename the computer.
