We have one of those (GX270 or some sort of old Optiplex) at work with obsolete WinXP, but a crashed hard drive. I have a spare drive I could stuff into it and see how it works with Ubuntu (but not tonight). It is not going to be a gaming machine with integrated Intel graphics, but should work fine for most other things. From juggling memory sticks in other computers it may have a little more RAM (1.27 GB?).

I run either Ubuntu 12.04 and Lubuntu 12.04 sharing a common home directory booting from SD card on a tablet PC that only has a 1 GHz 2 core cpu and it works fine. But it has 2 GB RAM and ATI HD graphics, so in a pinch (like when out of town) it is able to play minecraft (somewhat faster than in Win7).

I have not used Xubuntu, but Lubuntu is another version that is lighter (uses less resources) with lxde desktop than regular Ubuntu with Unity desktop. The special Debian Linux (Ubuntu is Debian based) for the Raspberry Pi computer on a credit card size board with 700 MHz ARM cpu and 512 MB RAM uses lxde desktop.

Short Answer: It will work fine but if your computer is already super slow i suggest you take all of your important files off of your hard drive and put it on an external HDD and then wipe your hard drive with a clean install. You should probably also upgrade the ram in your laptop. Buy a new higher capacity stick and swap them.

I pulled this directly from Ubuntu's website:

" A good "rule of thumb" is that machines that could run XP, Vista, Windows 7 or x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with Ubuntu even if they are lower-spec than described below. Simply try Ubuntu CD as a LiveCD first to check the hardware works. "

Ubuntu Desktop Edition

700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)

512 MiB RAM (system memory)

5 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)

VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution

Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media

Linux will run better/faster on this computer than XP ever did.

I personally commend Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop. The learning curve for a pre Windows 8 Windows user will be almost non-existent. The install is easier to go through than Windows. The only challenging aspect is making sure that you remember your user password and the root password.

Hey, here are the specs to run Ubuntu, taken from the website.

700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)

512 MB RAM (system memory)

5 GB of hard-drive space

Your PC will be able to run it, rather fast.

If for some strange reason after you have installed the operating system and it is slow, have no fear! Xubuntu is here!

Xubuntu is a lighter operating system, its great for older pc's with older graphics cards. But I think you'll be just fine with Ubuntu.

Good luck.

Yes= you will be fine with Ubuntu or Xubuntu. Xubuntu will be easier to run right away. Get version 12.04- don't get newest version.

Or you may try Linux Mint 13....either Mate or Cinnamon.

I have run Xubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 2200 with a celeron processor and 500 mb ram.

these systems will be a lot better for your computer, only you can decide which you prefer.
