We have a PC and a laptop connected via a wireless router. |The file sharing worked fine right up until I upgraded the laptop to XP service pack 2 instead of just XP. The PC was already running SP2.
Since then we get the message "###### is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

So far I have -
-Tried recreating home network on both machines
-Disabled windows firewall
-Made sure I was logged on with same username on both machines (this was suggested on another Answers post)

but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

You'll need to ensure that BOTH computers are on the same network name like MSHOME which is default.

Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> System

Then click on the "Computer Name" tab.

You may also need to re-enable file and printer sharing, which is accessed thru the security center >> firewall >> exceptions (tab), then see if there's a tick in that box.

One word - NORTON!!!!!! If you have it, either disable its firewall or add your router's ip address range to it. If you have a firewall router there is no need for a software one. Don't get rid of anti-virus though. This is the same with other security packages.

Also, instead of clicking the computer in network places, type in the address bar the ip address of the router like this:

\\192.168.2.3

In your case, i would suggest you to do full windows patching for both of laptop and desktop first. To do this, on your both machine, start-->all programmes-->windows update, follow the web screen to finish all critical updates.

Another thing, make sure the user you are using on both machines have local admin permission.

It should work.

Good luck.

What i could propose you do is this: a million) Get an get right of entry to element with a directional antenna. (you may could desire to purchase the antenna one after the other. if so, determine the get right of entry to element has a proper exterior antenna connector.) Configure the get right of entry to element as a station on your companion's father's community. objective the antenna at his domicile. 2) connect the get right of entry to element's Ethernet port to the WAN/information superhighway port of a instant router. Configure the instant router to create a WiFi LAN at your house of abode. Use port forwarding to permit your companion's father to get right of entry to his community storage gadget. on the off threat this does not artwork (500 ft line of sight, it may), get carry of yet another get right of entry to element with directional antenna. hit upon this one at your companion's father's domicile and objective it at you. That way, you each have a directional antenna aimed in the direction of the different.
