I pretty much had the same issue this past weekend. What you do is run windows network setup wizard. Make sure you use the defaults as they come up. Make sure you input the same name of the network on each computer. If you have a firewall or anti-virus on these computer you might want to shut them down during this process. If you need further help let me know and I would be glad to show you what I did to get mine working.

yet another selection is a 'captive portal'. Your instant community is open without protection, yet to get outdoors of the nearby instant community, consumers could authenticate by a internet website. There are commercial and open-source captive-portal suggestions. be conscious that the common implementation demands a separate instant router or instant get right of entry to component on your public instant consumers, and the captive portal workstation purposes as a router between your public instant consumers and your present internet router. i do no longer understand if there are some instant get right of entry to factors or instant routers that comprise the same answer. I examine some hyperlinks indicating an open-source version of firmware for the Linksys WRT54G is available that helps the countless captive portal application suggestions.

Unless you run a domain server, you need to set up matching user names and passwords on every machine you want them to be able to access. you then assign the correct permissions to per user for each available share offered.
