I've used a couple of on-line connection speed

testers (rather than writing my own test).

The first one is from C/Net:

This second one is from Verizon (which happens to

be my ISP), but as far as I know, this test should

be generic and should work with any ISP:

search in Yahoo/Google for "internet broadband connection test". You will get many sites. Select 3-4 of them and do a test. Take average of them. Some of them will be wrong, so average or most appeared one will do.

Download any large file, and Windows will show you the speed of the download, while the file is downloading. Just pick one of the files from this page: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/x86_64/iso/
