As versus what? The odds are that that DNS is part of your ISP, so it's closer network-wise than one elsewhere, which might affect other aspects of your Internet access that I'm not aware of.
If you mean, why an IP address rather than a URL, two reasons:
1. It doesn't make sense to have a Web address for something that's not really a Web site, and
2. What would perform the DNS function of converting the URL to an IP address?
