I run WinSCP for the file access, and it can run Putty from the menu (you have to download Putty also...)
That way, I can access/edit/delete all the files I need to on the Linux server, and run the terminal session as required.
Always try to use non-standard ports for SSH, hackers scan for port 22 all the time. Use PAT on the firewall if possible....

You will need some SSH software, like Putty http://www.putty.org/ . Once setup on your computer, you simply open putty, input the server information (IP etc) and connect. You will have a command line interface just like you have on the "Local" terminal (keyboard at the server).
