Question:
Files missing on Desktop...Linux?
?

Hi,
I am using RHEL 4.5 GNOME. Some of the files which are saved on Desktop cannot to seen on Desktop, whereas they can be viewed and accessed thru terminal.
Have checked the path, both shows the same thing. Probably no issue with the permission as well...
The user is a "nis user".
This issue is NOT with a single machine, it is observed in many.
Till now, I have come across this crap only with PDF and DOC files.

Thanks

when you look at your desktop in the terminal... the files you see; do they have a "." in front of them? If so these files are marked to be hidden. remove the dot and they should appear back on your desktop again.

Try asking on some Linux forums.

If it's a reproducible bug, you can submit a bug report to RedHat. RHEL is enterprise-grade Linux which should be more reliable and better supported than consumer grade like Ubuntu.

(the downside is that it doesn't have the latest libraries and sometimes it's hard to get the latest consumer apps like video players to install or compile, or to find the latest goodies compiled as RPMs - but check out the EPEL repository)

I don't use the desktop graphically so I haven't seen this behaviour. I'd suggest re-checking the file and folder permissions to make sure the desktop owner can read the files.

Hi Kiran

some of these lesser known distro have some issues which are sometimes almost impossible to resolve that is why the more popular and older versions are used as they have had all the bugs sorted.Mistakes have been made when compiling some of these distro's

so maybe a more well known type would be a better idea like suse supported by Novell or the ubuntu which seems to hold one of the top spots.

you have put in anti-virus until eventually now getting bothered by Viruses. besides that's substantial which you have a backup of your gadget. yet my answer relies upon on which form of backup you very own. in case you have run a lower back utilising ntbackup application which comes with win Xp by using default and if its a ASR backup, all you need to do is only boot from xp cd and restoration utilising ASR. in the journey that your "Backup" only skill which you have copied all your information right into a CD or different media by using established replica paste technique, then i'm sorry to tell you so you might format the gadget with a bootable xp cd and set up a sparkling replica, restoration all the records out of your backup, reinstall all the softwares/purposes as you want..!!! in case you need to understand the place the virus placed or your backup information is inadequate you could ok use a stay cd, right here i want to advise an ubuntu stay cd as not extra exe records artwork with linux, and erase the virus or backup the education subsequently. in case you have (or any of your acquaintances) yet another computing gadget with a reliable antivirus put in, you could ok take out your no longer common disk and attempt erasing the virus by using connecting to that computer. Sounds problematic? Thats it!!
