Question about DSL and routers?

I recently moved to an area where I can only have DSL, my last ISP was through the cable company, and now since i moved I am unable to get my wireless router to work. Is there anything about the settings that I should check to get it working again? the Internet is working when I do not have the router hooked up.

You need to configure the router to work with your DSL service provider.



to log into your router, try using 192.168.2.1 type that into your web browser for the address, if you never logged into it before, use admin for login, and admin for password, if that does not work, you might need to use the reset button on the router to reset the settings, try that again, if that does not work, you will need to go to the manufacutre website and get the directions for you router on the login and password that comes with your router.



Once logged in, you will need to set up your router as type PPPoE, the standard for DSL connections. You should also have the user name and password given to you by the DSL provider, a service name might be required, but is rare. Do not change MTU setting unless instructed to do so by your provider..

You will need to change your router's settings so that it logs into your new DSL account instead of your old cable account (see your router's manual for how to do this). You may also need to change your computer's Internet connection settings so that it looks to the router instead of trying to initiate a connection on its own. Your ISP can probably provide more detailed help.



And by the way, ignore those who claim that some ISPs don't work with some routers. Any router should work with just about any ISP's service.

Try resetting your router. If that doesn't help check your settings in the router. I believe they should set to PPOE not dynamic, depending on the DSL service.If its still not working try calling your telephone company(I'm guessing your getting the service through them) and ask for tech support they can walk you thru the steps to get it running.

DSL setup should be relatively simple. Do you have pppoe or fix IP address.



Do you still have the manual for your router ? You should be able to configure your router to work with your DSL modem.



Check with your tech support people, they typically will teach you how to configure your router to work with the DSL modem.

It depends on who your service is for DSL. All network cards and routers use an identification number (MAC Number). You can attempt to have your router identify and take the MAC number of your network card so that the DSL modem believes it is running through your network card. Otherwise you will have to call your DSL provider and have them reset the modem to pick up the routers MAC address. I have heard that with Verizon that you have to use one of their routers, but I have not tested that theory.
