Key skills of a good hacker are resourcefulness and the ability to track down and collate information. If you can't find material by yourself you are failing before you've even started. If you are looking for site that spoon feeds you and will turn you into a master hacker after an hour or so's causal perusal, forget it because that site does not exist.

As for where to start I would begin with the seminal "Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit" by Aleph One. It is easily found online and does not take too long to go through and covers buffer overflows - probably the single most common attack vector. A basic computer programming background will help but that is par for the course in this area.

Hacking is writing or interpreting programming code or scripts, so you just get a book on your favorite programming or scripting language. Since Linux is open source, you can look at the source code and makefiles of any Linux programs to get examples of how to do different things. Some programming codes are C or C++ or some scripting languages are Perl or Python or even the bash shell, or some others have specific things for graphics.

If you are asking about cracking instead (breaking into something or doing something nasty), this is not an appropriate place.

There's books on hacking. If you want to crack(the illegal activity) then you'll need to be friends with someone that is at a crackers site, and be able to contribute to them. But to do that, you need to stop being a script kiddie.

On our "computer" forum, we have a lot of tutorials, programs, guides, etc... that you may find useful. A buddy of mine is in charge of our Linux forum at http://www.maniaxe.com, it's free to register and free to view the Linux forums.
