We use a USB modem - I need an Ethernet connection for a work at home job I'm applying for. How can I tell if I have one?

And what would I need to buy to upgrade the computer to use Ethernet not a USB modem?

Go to Control Panel, Network Connections, IF you see a local area network connection, Odds are it is an Ethernet connection. However if you need this for a work at home setup, you really should check with the Corporate IT folks. They should have some standards regarding how things connect.

I don't understand why your prospective employer would care if you connect to the modem via USB or Ethernet cable, other than Ethernet might be slightly faster. Then again, I would bet that either connection could provide more throughput than your ISP can handle anyway.

But, to answer your question, just about all high speed modems here in Canada provide the option to connect via USB or via Ethernet cable.

Check the back of your modem to see if there is an unused connection. If it doesn't look like a USB connection then it must be Ethernet (sometimes known over here as Cat 5). Check on your pc for a similar connection. You should also go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. If you have an entry called "Local Area Connection" then that means the card is already installed, although it may be disabled.

If you don't have an Ethernet connection on your pc than you need to install an Ethernet card. They are very easy to install and they are very cheap to buy.

It is very simple. A ethernet connection is similar to your phone connection, but just bigger. So if you follow your phone cord and unplugged the connection connection form the wall you will see a connection call RJ11 which only have 2 cords or 4 at best. The ethernet port is just like it but instead of having 2 or 4 wires it has 8, so the connector will be a little bit bigger, but it won't fit on the telephone port.

Usually modems will have a USB connection as you said, but they will also have a ethernet connection as well, so check on your modem if it has one, cause I'm pretty sure it will. Also check your computer on the rear side to see if you have one there too.

I can think of 2 possible ways to answer this question. Are you asking if your computer is capable of connecting to an ethernet network, or are you asking if your computer is already connected to an ethernet network?

To find out if your computer is capable of connecting to an ethernet network follow these steps:

1) right click "My Computer"

2) click "properties"

3) click the "Hardware" tab

4) click "device manager"

5) expand "Network devices"

The devices listed there are usually able to connected to an ethernet network. If you don't have any listed then you need to install an ethernet card in your computer.

To find out if your computer is already connected to an ethernet network follow these steps:

1) Click "Start"

2) Click "Run"

3) type "cmd" and press enter

4) type "ipconfig /all"

Look for a line that says IP Address. If that line has numbers, you should be connected to a network. However, if the numbers are all 0 or if the numbers start with 169, you might have an ethernet card, but no network connection.

Good luck.

An ethernet connection looks a bit like a phone socket, but is bigger. It's often above the USB ports on the back of teh PC.

To go from USB to ethernet, you may need to buy an ADSL router (I've assumed you're connected via ADSL...)

Ethernet is usually present in modern computer. (usually at back side of computer)

It looks like this (both Ethernet port and Ethernet cable shown below):-

It look like telephone jack (but bigger) and look at below link for symbol ( 3box connected to line) which represent Ethernet port (not necessary that symbol be there)
