Hi,
I need a really stable internet connection (which wireless isn't) to play a certain online game. I'm hoping to go buy the cable tomorrow, but I don't knnow which one I need or if it's just a case of plugging a cable in between the laptop and router? I've notice the one below for sale in a local high street store, online. Is this the right one? It's £10.
Help!

Holy geez, i need to start reading the FULL question before i answer, any how, NO, the Crossover cable is for connecting a computer directly to another computer without a Router, you need a patch cable to get the job done without permanently damaging your router, further more, its only a "bloody" cable, its compatible with any kind of computer, and the plug type is right, RJ-45 Ethernet Patch Cable, that should be what its name will look like... is there a website to the "high street store" that i could maybe proof read it for you?

check it our im a savage gamer, and to be honest with you, Wired isnt the best any more, you have heard of Wireless N right? the lan speed of Wired is 100Mbps with just about everything, but N with the same brand name adapter (usually USB) is up to 300Mbps, now i hate math, but i like the math about 802.11n its much faster and more stable than A, G, or B. So knowing that, if you still insist on going wired, with your laptop, just look for the Ethernet port, its the fatter looking phone jack, takes a regular RJ-45 ethernet cord, make sure its the proper length, otherwise your gaming experience will be at an angle... lol. The best thing i can refer for you, is use a Dlink with ANY routing, i may sound like im advertising for Dlink which im not, im just a enthused gamer who finally got out of the ARMY, but they do make the best routers, ESPECIALLY the one i got, lol, Dlink Xtreme N Gaming Router, powered by GameFuel... this thing is powerful, never do i experience game drop-outs from other computers using the router, this router prioritizes gameplay. yeah, im sorry but if you are an avid gamer and your using anything other than a Dlink, you may as well stay wireless, because the best use Dlink, noobs use the rest.

What games you playing anyway? Hey maybe we know each other already lol.

Step 1:

Determine the length of cable that you need between your laptop and the router catering for the maximum distance the laptop will be from the laptop. This means plotting out a path from your laptop to where the router is currently, whether the cable will be running across a wall, or along the edge of the floor. This way you won't buy a cable that is too short or too long for your purposes.

Step 2:

You're looking for a straight through cable NOT a crossover cable, with RJ45 on both ends. This type of cable end is bigger than your normal house telephone ends, so that is one way to know you've got the right one. You can ask for the straight-through cable version to the crossover cable that they've got.

Apart from the crossover (meaning wires are switched in the cable itself) and the length the other specs for the cable are okay.

1. ) Yes, it is possible. 2.) You need a wireless router. I would recommend Linksys. Other brands may be cheaper, but not as reliable. 3.) Your desktop won't need conversion. A wireless router will have ports for connecting to your desktop with a cable. 4.) Yes, you can protect your wireless connection. I would recommend WPA . If you call Linksys free tech support, they will help you with setting this up. If you can do your own research, it's not that difficult to set up. 5.) No your history cannot be accessed. The router has an option to create a log of sites visited. It is disabled by default. 6.)Make sure you keep your wireless network secure. It's not really complicated to set it up. The hardest part is putting the security on. The router comes with a setup CD. I'm not sure if it would help. I never used it since I know how to set it up.

I presume you have a switch / router / wireless unit integrated into one unit. The modem plugs into the router WAN or Internet port and there is at least one LAN port on the router that is unused now.

Connect the notebook via a straight CAT5 cable, not a crossed cable. You are describing a cross cable which is not what you want.

As long as it's a LAN cable, it's right (50 PINS?)

A LAN plug look like a telephone plug that swallowed something slightly bigger and wider than itself.
