I have a 6mbps connection with att. Its dsl.
Whenever I use firefox or internet exlorer to download anything, like direct download.
I've tried download trial version of photoshop, and my download was 20kbps - 40kbps.
Whatever I download, its slow between 15kbps - 40kbps.

I've noticed, that if were to use windows update, it would update/download the files at 400kbps or higher, when I did windows update and same goes with utorrent for linux isos.
What is wrong with my connection, or my laptop?

depending on how far you leave from the distribution box, your net will be slow. I have also noticed DSL to be fast at night and slow daytime, i guess lots ppl are using day time. with DSL intenet is not fast compared to like cable, due to how much data can travel in that telephone wire.

Call AT&T. That's what I do when my internet speed goes down or gets real slow. Then listen to them tell you it's your computer. No, they may be able to help you. We hope.
