Question:
VPN Phone Laptop Info I Wish To Know?

Ok, heres the question:

I have an Asus Windows 10 laptop at home.

But, I have NO WIFI access at home What so ever .

This means, if i want to go on the internet, i have to tether my phone to my laptop

Now, I have recently installed a Virtural Private Network (VPN) connection on said computer.

So, if i tether my phone to my laptop, Would my phone data be effected if i used the VPN while i was browsing sites like Youtube and other popular internet sites?

If yes, how would my phone data be effected?

When you tether a laptop running a VPN to a smart phone to use the phone's cellular Internet connection, it is only the data from the laptop that is encrypted by the VPN. This encrypted data will remain encrypted all the way from the laptop to the VPN/Proxy Server that you are connected to from the laptop, although the cellular network will add its own encryption to all data crossing the cellular network. Effectively, the laptop data will be double encrypted as it crosses the cellular network.

Any data sent to or from Apps on the phone will not be affected by the VPN, but will still have the cellular encryption.

Although many VPNs add a SMALL amount of additional data because of the encryption, there are some VPNs that include data compression. This may not achieve any compression for video streaming as most video streams and MP3 music files are already compressed and cannot be further compressed. However, for general websites and text type files, the compression can make the actual data very much smaller than it would be if a VPN was not being used. The best I have seen was some years ago when VPN compression for a particular system I was working which achieved around 75% compression of the files when encrypted by that VPN. This was for large tabulated indexes that actually used about a quarter of the amount of data across the Internet that they contained when they had been decrypted.

I hope this helps.

VPN will use more of your data, however that amount is fairly negligible. It also depends on which protocol you use for VPN. L2TP will have the most overhead, then Open VPN, and then PPTP.

Yes. VPN connected devices use much more data to handle the encryption. So it will be slower and cost you more.

Whenever you tether your phone to your computer for internet you are using your data.
