By "tested the Internet on a laptop" do you mean you plugged your Internet connection straight into the laptop? And by "plugged the input into the switch" does this mean you connected your CPD (Customer Premises Device [modem]) directly into the switch?

If so, you have serveral problems. The first, your switch is a Layer2 device, which means it only provides local network access. This will work if your ISP is giving you multiple IP addresses, but if you are only getting one, one device will take it and the other won't get an address. What you need in this case is a router. It will connect to the CPD and get your public IP. It will then create an internal network and assign private IP address to you clients. You can connect your switch into the router to get more ports.

In most cases you can use a business class network device out of the box, but I'm never used the Procurve. Sometimes the Interfaces are on (which it sounds like they are) but still need some configuration to work. Consult the instructions.

There should be an uplink (Input port) which should be connected to your mode/dsl port 2 or 1 then connect the laptops on the other ports on the switch numbered 1-48 even randomly then it should work. make sure the switch power is plugged in and the pilot lights are on. If there is a connection on the laptops you will see the switch corresponding port flashing.

Hello,

one Laptop connected will go online as that will be getting a public ip address from ISP and switch just forwards that to router.

if u need other laptop to connect then u have to enable (though it's layer2 switch)DHCP feature in it,
