I've heard that it's possible to use ping as an speed test.
i have 128 kbps DSL, and when i ping yahoo.com in windows command prompt, the time is around 1148 ms. i have no idea what this means. i've noticed that my speed has decreased for a few days. even today, i got two results when tired to ping yahoo.com. 1st time was around 640 ms, and NOW, around 1200 ms!!!
can any1 explain to me what this is? and if this is good for 128 dsl or not?
any help is appreciated! ;)

you cant really get an accurate idea when pinging, if the site you are pinging is very busy or no the ping response can go up or down, the only way is using a site such as speedtest.net which takes an average

I've used the ping command before. but really, you only use it to test YOUR connection. you ping the ip address, the subnet mask, or dns

as far as i know, the 1148ms/640ms/1200ms are only the air delay or the duration before you reach the site you are pinging.

If you want to test your speed, you might want to try

www.speedtest.net and choose the server near you.

it is actually normal that your dsl speed changes from time to time since the speed varies on how your server responds
