Question:
LAN network with wireless and wired connections?
?

I'm planning a 5-man LAN party at my house. From what google tells me, a LAN can either be all of the computers connected to the router by wire, or connected to the router via an ad hoc wireless network. Right? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Now, my router only has four ports, and we don't have enough ethernet cables anyway. Is there any way to set up a LAN with both wired and wireless computers connecting? Like combining an ad hoc network with the wired one, since they are still connected via the router?

If not, which I suspect, would it be an option to just have everyone log onto the internet network whatever way they want, wireless or wired, and just set up a server and join and play via regular internet? I think having 5 computers leech off one internet connection would be hard on the bandwidth, but I guess we'll see how it works out. Not quite a LAN party, more like a... well, regular gaming party, I guess. So would it work this way?

NO! If you have a router it should provide wireless as well. Do NOT mess with ad hoc, oyu will spend the whole time messing with it. Easiest is to buy a netwrk swatch, and some network cables. connect the switch to the router and soemof the machines to the switch. Switches come with 5 , 8, 16 ports. And more. If your router has wireless (90 % of them do now) some can connect to that, others wired.

your home router already has a 4-port switch in it.

Use that, plus the home router's Wireless Access Point to provide the network.

As long as you are all on the same network (and the server) you'll have no issues.

As mentioned, you do NOT need to create an ad hoc network. Any and all computers connected to the router wired or wirelessly will be on the same LAN. As long as all computers have DHCP enabled (usually default), you shouldn't need to make any configuration changes to your network.

Just be sure to have anyone connected wirelessly to remain somewhat close to the router in order to avoid/reduce lag.
