Question:
ICMP Flood Home Router Help!?
?

Yesterday I could no longer access the internet or the local page of my router. I looked in the router log and it appears I have been flooded by ICMP pings from a number of different IP addresses from
Russia, Croatia, China & the US.

I was able to get a new IP address by restarting my modem, however as soon as I got the new address I started receiving the attacks again. Many times a second.

Do you think there is something on my computer that is updating my IP address, meaning that the attacks keep happening even when the IP changes?

I did do a virus scan of the machine and avast found a virus: WMA: Wimad (Drp). I can't seem to get much info about this online and am wondering if this could be playing a part in the attacks.

Thanks. I am a student and would really appreciate any help!

You are probably on the right track. Although your router's IP address changes, your computer is somehow communicating your new IP address (unless your ISP is under attack and the IP range they are using is being flooded.)

One scan by a free antivirus program is not going to be enough. Visit some of the on-line scanners from reputable companies like Trend Micro and Microsoft.

You might have a rootkit virus which are hard for some antivirus programs to detect so run Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool which removes some rootkits. Also run some third party rootkit detectors from Sophos and Panda. It won't hurt to run versions from different companies.

It is more than likely nothing directly to do with you or your computer.

Denial of Service (DOS) attacks using ping are a broadcast system where they target a specific IP numerically, they dont even know if it exists until after the first attempt. Usually the perpetrators are automatic systems that are given an IP range and then programatically iterate through the range sending ping's as fast as they can.
