My family just got a new router and modem. I created a network and can access the internet but my sisters machine can only connect to the network and will not connect to the internet. How do I fix this problem please use simple terms.

So just to clarify you're using a separate router and modem. You've got one machine that can connect hassle-free to both the network and the internet.

The device that can connect to the internet- is it using WiFi or Ethernet? Same question to the device that cannot get on the internet.

Also what operating systems are you running on the machines?

Finally is your sister's computer actually authenticating on the network? Does it acquire an IP address? Can it access network shares, ping other machines on the network, etc?

Please add some details and I'll gladly help you troubleshoot.

@ Jacob:

Hello there mate :-)

You've said it's your boss's laptop- is this configured to connect to a domain at all, or perhaps configured with a static IP? If it's been used in an enterprise network it may not be expecting a DHCP-enabled router. Check out the adapter properties and make sure it's not got a static IP set.

How are you connecting? WiFi or Ethernet? Does the issue occur when using both connection types (one at a time of course)? If the issue only occurs over one of the connection types then perhaps it's a driver issue for the network adapter in the laptop.

@ Kevin:

That is strange. Yet her computer's still recognised on the local network? Have you tried flushing the dns cache? (ipconfig /flushdns)

@ Jacob:

Right, ok mate, no worries. Do me a favour; run "cmd", then type the following "ipconfig /all > %homepath%\desktop\ip.txt". Press enter. That'll create a file on your desktop called "ip.txt". Either paste the contents in here, or if you like we can move this to e-mail if you'd prefer. If so there's a link on my profile to e-mail me.

@ Jacob:

I hate to break it to you- but you can right click the cmd window -> select all, then right click it again. It'll be copied to your clipboard and can then be pasted anywhere :P Also ideally the " > %homepath%\desktop\ip.txt" should've outputted the text to a nice lil' text file, alas it didn't. Oh well :-)

But anyway... that's telling me you've got both your ethernet and wifi disconnected... what does your ipconfig look like with the ethernet connected?

~

Ah of course- that's my foolishness! :P

How did you manage to get it working over Ethernet? What did you change?

I'm having the same problem ...

DEAN! Hi there buddy ;D

My boss' laptop will connect to my router, but won't connect to the internet. And no, it doesn't acquire an IP Address... I can't fix it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@Dean: I'm using WiFi, or trying to. I have no idea what you mean by all of this, lol.

My laptop connects fine to my router and connects to the internet. All I can tell you is that it connects to my router and has great connectivity, but it cannot get on a web browser at all. No IP is acquired. >.<

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@Dean: Do you have a messenger I can add you at? Would be way quicker for me to get answers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@Dean: I'll type it all here, since I can't copy and paste.. here we go..

ipconfig /all:

Ethernet adapter wireless network connection:

Media state ... Media disconnected

Description ... Dell wireless 1397 WLAN mini-card

%homepath%\desktop\ip.txt :

It just says "%homepath%\desktop\ip.txt is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or bath file.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@Dean:

Nonono, I'm on my laptop while I'm working on my boss'... so I can't copy and paste from one computer to the other.

On the plus side: I got the internet to work with a wired connection. But still no internet connection when using the WiFi.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be honest, I don't know. I did did what you told the asker of this question to do... Then I just thought I would plug it up to my modem manually to see.. And it worked! Now just to get the WiFi to work...
