I want to setup an IVR system. This system is required to read the selected text for the callers while he/she has pressed a specific number through his/her phone.
I know some open source IVR systems. But I don't know what the requirements are! Please tell me what the hardware and software requirements are and tell me the steps I have to pass follow to setup such a system.

Hi

For build a IVR Solution You need hardware Card(Dialogic/ICON) and a software to call/recieve Intractive Voice Responces from target users. This can be XtendIVR or Graphical VOS

After this you need a telephone line/E1 line(Set of 30 phone lines) . Its depends on the scope of you business. for personal or short business single phone line is sufficient

My personal IVR field experience says that Dialogic and XtendIVR combination is the best

You don't necessarily need your own server/hardware. There are now a number of cloud based solutions that let you setup IVR systems on a pay per usage bases.

If you want to setup IVR without your own server/hardware try http://www.ivrdesigner.com, they offer a drag and drop interface for setting up a cloud based IVR.

If you do want to own the hardware you can get a VPS or Dedicated server and run Asterisk. For PSTN call you will need SIP trunking provider, unless you want to setup your own which is a real fun time as Robin A has pointed out.

First, you will need a server and some software. I can recommend Asterisk. It's a VoIP PBX and it's free. Asterisk can do IVR, MOH, call waiting, transfering, hunt groups etc..

If you need to connect the server to a POTS phone system you will need some interface cards. If you only have one outside line you could use a TA like an SPA3000 (i bought mine for 40 euro).
