I am a customer who uses Cox internet service in my home. Recently, I bought a laptop computer that can detect wifi signals for internet use. I was wondering if I bought a wireless internet router, could I possibly use that router for wireless internet distribution in my home, in place of the non-wireless router that Cox has supplied? Or, would I have to find a way to connect a wireless router to the router already supplied to me by Cox? Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. Please help. Thank you!

Cox has most likely supplied you with a combination modem /router. You can add your own wireless router but the configuration is just a little different. The only real difference from usual is that your new wireless router must not run a DHCP server. It must point to the Cox modem/router as its gateway, and use that to get its IP address and nameservers.

Yes. Easiest way would be to plug in the new wireless router into a internet port on the back of the Cox router. Then you don't have to replace anything and get Cox to re-configure anything.

I suppose what you had is a cable modem. If that is the case, any wireless router will do. Hope that helps.
