Question:
Why is my computer so slow?
2008-10-30 07:05:12 UTC
My computer is really slow, it takes about 5 Minutes to start up & log in after i have switched it on. Then finally once im logged on i have to wait a further 5 minutes to be able to connect to the internet.
I haven't got any games or anything i can think of on the computer to result to it becoming extra slow over the years.

Saying that i have had the computer for about 4 Years!

Any way i can speed it up a bit??

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

The reason the computer gets slow is due to the registry files becoming corrupted, or messed up, in simple terms. These files tell the computer or laptop how to operate the software installed on the system. If any of these files get messed up, the computer is not sure what to do and this will really slow down the computer. The other scenario is where you download other software, screensavers, pictures, videos, or even music, and this will somehow change the settings on a registry file. When this happens, the original program that needs that file now has the wrong instructions in it. So, it will cause the computer to run slow, or in a worse case, crash.

You can speed up your computer with a thorough analysis and repair of your registry. The registry Scan will identify corrupt files, paths, and registry keys causing your computer to have errors and run slow.Go to http://www.registry-bot.com to download registry bot.It is the most advanced and comprehensive registry repair product on the market. It will speed up your computer and make windows startup faster.

Alright look, I've read the answers here and if you'd like an easy, uncomplicated way to help your computer run faster, here it is.

You've obviously built up alot of crap on your computer. Usually when installing programs it adds a quick start button to your desktop.

The more you have, the slower the computer is. When you start up your computer, the programs automatically run and your computer lags.

Got XP and want a fix? Follow these steps. (if you have Vista, let me know)

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes: Process SYSTEM.INI File

Process WIN.INI File

Load Startup Items

4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

It disables all programs from automatically running when you log on. If you want programs to run, you're free to choose.

To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run

Type in "appwiz.cpl"

Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in "msconfig".

Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored for certain websites.

Next, you should install CCleaner; it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.

Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs

Go to Accessories and System Tools.

Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and expand all listings. Now rightclick and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.

Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive

Check the Compress Drive button and let it do its thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. The easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

You haven't really provided any useful info (though age helps). Is this a new problem or a recurring one for the past 4 years?

How big is your HD? How much of that is full (I recommend no more than 85% of total capacity. Once you've cleared that up, defrag the HD.

How much RAM to do you have? I recommend 1GB for XP (I;m guessing that you're on XP).

Go into Control panel and click on add/remove software. get rid of anything you don't want.

Download a registry cleaner (I recommend CCleaner). Whatever you download, make sure you go to a reputable source like download.com.

Have you ever defragged your computer?

Hard drive fragmentation will severely affect the speed and reliability of your computer. Fragmentation is often the cause of system slows, malfunctions such as system hangs, program errors or a complete crash.

So defrag your hard drive, better yet, install an automatic defrag like Diskeeper, you can download free trialware at www.diskeeper.com.

It's probably just a matter of cleaning...get something to get rid of all the spyware...clean your registry and defrag...that's about all you can do. Upgrade your Ram... Tune Up Utilities is a really good no brain required program...and Lavasoft Adaware is good for spyware removal...

look on the taskbar when your computer is fully loaded, the icons you see there are all your programs that run at start-up and are not necessary as it will slow you down.

1 enter msconfig into the run commands

2 general tab tick selective start-up

3 start-up tab

4 untick all your programs you know not to run at start-up
