I can never figure out the port forwarding, tutorials don't seem to help me. Online hosts would be great, but they seem expensie and unreliable. Solutions??

There's really only two options: You do it, or someone does it for you. If the "someone does it for you" option seems too expensive, then its time to learn how to port forward.

The Minecraft Server application relies on Java, so begin by making sure you have the latest version of Java 7 installed (32-bit or 64-bit, depending on your Windows version).

Once that’s done,

download Minecraft_Server.exe from Minecraft.net and save it into a dedicated folder, like C:\MinecraftServer.

Go ahead and run the server application, which will bring up a simple interface window. Don’t worry about any “missing file” warnings, those are normal for the first run. Once the series of “Preparing spawn area” messages is finished by a line that says “Done,” type “stop” in the text field and press Enter.

not so fast it's fairly easy but you need to understand somethings if you don't have more than 20mbps download and 8mpbs upload you can't expect to host more than 10 people at once another thing is you'll want a computer with at least a dual core with hyper threading or a just a true qaud core and at least 4GB ram then there's the environment in which it runs are you gonna host an smp or bukkit let's just say smp because bukkit went to **** with that DMCA that was filed you download the file then run it and it should take care of the rest but you need to make some minor changes to the startup config like memory usage map and admin privalges and what not the port forwarding is usually easy unless you have a locked down modem form your ISP if not then open chrome or explorer and type one of these in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.0 enter user name and password just look it up for your router then look for gaming applications or port forwarding/triggering tab select forwarding give it a name inbound ports 25565-25565 outbound ports 25565-25565 select tcp/udp then type in the address of the machine running the server if you like i will offer assistance over Skype trust me i use to helped some friend run a runescape bot hosting website they also did minecraft servers

its not super hard but without knowing what your router is there isnt much we can do.
