i have a xp machine with several file share folders over my home network, i have one for music, video, applications and games. all these can be accessed fine on both my xp/vista/linux computers,

but i want to set up a folder called "my_name-private" for hosting some of my private files over my home lan. only problem is that a few people use the other shares and i wouldn't want them to use this one due to the sensitive information i wish to store on it, so is there a way to password a single read/write share folder on the xp machine.

thanks loads for all answers

Speaking only for XP, it doesn't allow passwords to protect folders. It relies on permissions to access the folder. If you want to password protect files you are better off using FTP. Set up an FTP service on one of your PCs and then you can set access to them with username & passwords.

i don't know about vista or linux but i don't think you can with xp home but your can with xp pro

if you have xp pro just got to my computer then click tools on menu bar then folder options then click view scroll the list to the bottom and untick ("use simple file sharing") then hopefully you should have the password/permission option in the folder you want to share in the "sharing and securty" part

there's some issues you're able to do. you need to use something like TruCrypt, or Lockbox, or you need to use WinRar. i've got by no ability used Lockbox, or Trucrypt a mind-blowing deal, so i'm going to describe the thank you to do it with WinRar. First ensure you have WinRar downloaded. Then have a folder which you incredibly choose for to password defend. next, you would be wanting to precise click on your folder and choose "upload to archive..." you are able to then call the archive, or use it is default call, which could be the report call. click the very best tab, and choose set password. you are able to then form on your password, and want to encrypt the report names in case you want. Then click ok. choosing to encrypt the report names will make you basically ought to enter the password to decrypt the folder, then each thing could be opened without password. in case you do no longer verify the encrypt report call container, each and each rfile could have you ever enter the password till now it is allowed to be opened. WinRar will now make an archive of that folder. To open your password secure report, purely purely double click on the WinRar archive report. contained in the WinRar container, you are able to flick contained in direction of the folder like widespread, then double click what you are able to choose for to open. it is going to then instantaneous you for the password. If the password is right, your archives will open up. while saving your artwork, it is going to additionally ask you in case you are able to choose for to shop the diversities to the archive. you are able to choose for to click sure, so it updates the report. in case you ever choose for to thoroughly liberate the report, you are able to purely precise click on it and want to extract it. This enhance into style of speedy and tough, in spite of if it may provide a concept on what WinRar can do to help gain your purpose.
