I'm trying to establish remote desktop connection. I get this error: Error 800: Unable to establish the VP

Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.

Does anyone know what this means and what I should do to fix it? Thanks.

This sounds like you are using the VPN connection in Windows to try and connect. Make sure you are trying to connect with Remote Desktop Connection (Start - All Programs - Accessories - Communications - RDC).



If you are trying to connect to your office's VPN first, before connecting to the remote desktop, then of course, your company will need to make the VPN work first (a VPN just makes your connection secure and private over the public Internet; nothing more). The VPN connection (a secure, private, encrypted connection) needs to be established before you go forward with the remote desktop connection. Once connected to the VPN (if you do indeed have a VPN), then you will use your RDC software to connect to the Terminal Server.



If you own/operate the computer/network that you are trying to connect to, then you will need to make sure to have port 3389 open on your router and all incoming (form the Internet) RDP traffic should be ported (forwarded) to the Remote Desktop computer that you are trying to connect to.

ok...found the problem. the user had created a vpn connection when she was supposed to be connecting over remote desktop connection. sometimes, you have to lay eyes on things yourself and not go by their word. I was wondering why she would be getting that error when connecting over RDP! she did not need to use vpn because she was just connecting to another computer within the same network. thanks for the help.
