Question:
Do WiFi extenders increase speed?

I have a PS4 in my room using WiFi. The main modem is in the floor right below me, and I get around 10 mbps of my 50 mbps plan. Will a WiFi extender increase my download speed if I put one in my room? I already get a signal, just not the speed I wish to have. If not, please give other options. First to answer in the clearest way will be picked.

The main work of extender is greatly reduce throughput.

most wifi extenders are not really a speed thing, like others have said they forward signal so loose speed, your best bets are if you can an ethernet cable and if you cant then powerline adapters work well in most cases.

modems do not provide wifi - wireless routers do...

a wifi extender is a store then forward device, so typically they reduce speed by around 50%... they also increase ping time (lag)... just what you do not want for online gaming...

if you cannot run an ethernet cable between the ps4 and the router, then investigate using powerline network adapters such as:

there are other makes and models...

i hope this helps...

On some routers there is an option similar to transmit power.

Make sure it's set to it's highest if you want the farthest range.

You can also buy a new router with a more powerful antenna.

Or buy a new router with a wireless signal that is more recent, such as wireless-ac or wireless-n

Hope this answer helps

They do not increase speed, they increase range. A range extender is creating an access point that connects to your router so that you can have more coverage. They are known sometimes to limit bandwidth as they do not have the same capabilities as a router and should be used only if you have dead spots. A better solution would be to get a whole home wi-fi system that uses nodes around your home that create one network. As you move around your home, your device will connect to the nearest node. The great thing about a whole home wi-fi system, is that you do not lose any bandwidth like you might with a range extender. Most of the big router companies now have these types of systems. Also there are some other brands like Eero and Luma. Please let me know if you have any more questions!

No. It will make NO DIFFERENCE to the speed you are getting over the wire to the Internet. It is just possible that your wifi speed to the router is not at the maximum possible. It might only be half the speed possible. But that is still around 1000 times faster than the speed to the Internet.

On the contrary. A repeater will cut the speed. That's the nature of it.

Although your ISP provides you with 50 MB's download speed, WiFi will not render the maximum amount. WiFi will limit your download speed regardless of an enhanced wifi signal.. The only way to render max speeds your ISP provides with your home internet, CAT5 /ethernet is the solution for the max download speed (Direct connect)

I was looking at WIFI extenders once and was told you are better to get a new modem/router that has a better range.

run a cat6 cable from the switch port of the modem router to you room and install a wireless access point at that location

your wifi may be rated to 300mbps... big whoopie! that is standing beside it... further the distance, the slower the speed... through walls and the speed is reduced... trying to send vertical instead of horizontal and the speed drops... you can try using a damn stupid "wifi extender" or "repeater" -- pick a point where the signal is not too slow and try to get a signal to your ps4...

or you can run an ethernet cable from the modem/router/whatever to your room -- 100mbps with no slowing... if you need wifi in your room, put an access point in your room...

Quite the reverse wifi extenders will halve the speed this is because they have to rebroadcast the wifi signal effectively halving the throughput
