are you sure the gateway is connected to the internet?

24/7 Domain Servers out on the internet are

4.2.2.2

4.2.2.3

4.2.2.4

As for joining the domain.. are you sure you're typing the domain name right? The PDC is running, and on the network to join to, and you don't have any firewalls or other blocking applications in place? Check the windows firewall, or any 3rd party programs, try pinging the domain server by IP or NetBIOS name... if those aren't happening, you're certainly not going to join... you'll also need a privileged account from the server to sign in with to join the domain... if you don't know that either, might as well ask for someone else.

I'd say the most common reason for not being able to join a domain is that your local DNS server settings are pointing to a DNS server on the internet. For a Windows domain to function, there must be a server on the domain running DNS and hosting an Active Directory-integrated zone for your domain. This is the server (or servers) that you must have specified as your DNS server in your network properties. This local DNS server will forward requests for domains on the internet and then forward the responses back.

From a command prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL. The only DNS servers listed should be local DNS servers. I'm going to assume you're using private IP addresses, so if your DNS servers don't look like 10.*.*.*, 172.*.*.*, or 192.168.*.*, you're going to have problems joining the domain.

2003 has a default domain policy built in. you have to go to the GPO page and delete it or change it. just go to your AD... right click on a group and go to GPO. click on your domain and the default password GPO.
