With IT now such a critical piece of every business, networks can no longer be managed and monitored in isolation. It is really important to understand how the network interacts with the rest of the infrastructure. For network technicians, it is very valuable to have tools that monitor not only the network but also give you visibility of associated virtual and physical servers, storage devices and applications. As IT infrastructure now stretches into the cloud, monitoring visibility needs to extend there too. This cross-domain capability can quickly show network teams how a server or storage issue – even in the cloud - affects perceived network performance. Since the network is often blamed first when problems occur, network teams can add a lot of value by adding cross-domain visibility that traditional tools don’t offer.

Network monitoring is a computer network's systematic effort to detect slow or failing network components, such as overloaded or crashed/frozen servers, failing routers, failed switches or other problematic devices. In the event of a network failure or similar outage, the network monitoring system alerts the network administrator (NA). Network monitoring is a subset of network management.

Network monitoring is generally carried out through software applications and tools. Network monitoring services are widely used to detect whether a given Web server is functioning and connected properly to networks worldwide. Many servers that perform this function provide a more complete visualization of both the Internet and networks.

It means keeping an eye on your network status, or a health check on the network(s) the system admins are responsible for.

If there is a problem with the network, everything can shut down and this goes hand-in-hand with huge financial losses, so it's very important to know at all times what is going on with the network so that system admins can intervene before something becomes a problem.

There are 1000's of different software packages for network monitoring. You go with what you think is needed and what you can afford.

Just as the name says, it means monitoring the network. There are various methods to do it depending on the infrastructure used but it will basically check the traffic, possibly where it comes from and where it goes, the collisions, packets losses, etc.

It has the same meaning as anything that you monitor. Baby monitoring means? Cheeseburger monitoring means? Monitoring means "watching" in all contexts.
