Go here:

http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux

I used the Ubuntu server setup to create my web server, and it includes mysql and I loaded php as well...

On top, I have FTP, email and bind (DNS)

This all on a 2.4Ghz celeron with 512MB memory...

It's true about ISP's blocking incoming port 80. You may have to use a different port along with a dynamic DNS service like DynDNS, DtDNS, No-IP, etc. With those services, you can get a general URL (DNS) name to redirect to port 8080 or something, transparent to the users...

The biggest factor is to make sure your ISP permits this -- most ISPs explicitly forbid running any server that will be accessed by the general public from a residential account. In other words, if you're not paying at least $300/month for Internet service, you more than likely are breaking the terms of service.

It is almost always cheaper and more reliable to just find a decent webhost -- Dedicated server or Virtual Private Server (VPS).

seem at it and say, "you're a server." it truly is it. there is not any enormous difference, it fairly is basically a time period to intend that it has more advantageous RAM or swifter processors, yet Microsoft's internet website says that the minimum pc criteria to run their server application is below 80% of the pc presented contained in the present as residing house pcs! promotion, are you able to've self belief it? i assume as without delay as you position in server application it at the same time as it technically turns precise right into a "server".

If you have to ask, you are not ready to run a web server. This requires alot of know how and administration. If you do not do it properly your webserver will get hacked in no time flat.
