Why won't remote desktop connect over VPN ?

I just got connected to the VPN at my mates house - setup on his server (running Windows Server 2003). There is a problem, though - I cannot connect to the server IP over remote desktop once I am connected to the VPN. I can if I dosconnect from the VPN and use his external IP address but I want another solution.

Do you have two networks on the Server? What IP address did you set up to hand out to clients that connect? You would not use the same IP address to connect to the desktop over the VPN as you would just coming on over the Internet. I do this all the time with the same server setup. I connect to the VPN using the public IP address, but use the internal protected subnet (like 10.0.0.x or 192.168.0.x) to connect to the remote desktop. I am not sure how Windows will try to route if you only have one subnet connected to the server.



There may also be a DNS issue if you are trying to connect using the URL for the machine. It will try to use the outside address rather than the internal address, depending on how you set up DHCP to the VPN client.

Check firewall settings on server's VPN connection adapter. The port 3389 should be openned for inbound connections. More details on that would be great..
