Do i need a network adapter?

When im in kali linux in virtual box and try to see the network device around me or routers, it scans but no devices come up. When i go to my regular os without virtual box i go to the right click on the wirelese thing, i can see all routes/access pounts...do i need a wireless adapter to seet access points when i run airodump? Because i dont see anything

Normally when running an OS in virtual box it can use the host computer's networking to access a network normally, but it is indirectly (virtual), so you cannot manipulate the hardware directly. See 3.8 of virtualbox manual which links to more info:

Your Virtual Box and Host Box both can't use the same device together...



You need a USB Network adapter for your Virtual box to utilize it.

As far as I know, one cannot expect just any WIFI USB device to work because you aren't going through the host OS to use it, you are accessing it directly. In other words, you can't use the host OS drivers, you need to have compatible drivers installed.
