Ok so he may not be evil but his really inconsiderate .

At the moment he seems to be downloading a lot of torrents , I've asked him to stop but he denies it despite my seeing them on his laptop on numerous occasions.

I just want a way to restrict his bandwidth down to a fair amount without slowing everyone elses down. My router a TP - Link TL - WR740N can restrict bandwidth but it seems to do it for everyone.

Is there a way to set this or any other method I could use to limit his bandwidth at the moment I cant get any work done and it just doesn't seem very fair.

He wont let me on his latptop so what ever I do it has to be through the router.

Thanks guys.

There are two possible options.

1) Install custom firmware, http://dd-wrt.com/site/index

DD-WRT will allow you to do some truly powerful stuff.

It'll turn your router into a beast (and you'll have control over it ;).

I recommend this option.

And yes. The TP-Link WR740N is compatible with it.

There are instructions on the DD WRT site on how to install. It isn't hard.

2) I'm not sure about the specifics of your router, but here are some general instructions:

- Find a page in your wireless settings that allows you to control applications.

- Choose your friend's computer's IP address and figure out which port he is using for Torrenting.

- You'll need access to his computer, if just for a moment.

- Now you should be able to create a rule to throttle his bandwidth.

Note that the #2 instructions are fairly generalized. I recommend option #1, as I mentioned before.

Edit: all the folks expecting his hard-drive to crash due to torrents are imbeciles.

I say let him. the torrents will deep fry his hard drive soon enough, then you can browse in peace.
