Question:
Wouldn't an edited (filtered) DNS server, be so much faster than a proxy server, for parental controls?

I've got a laptop my kids use. I believe that the MS Live Parental Controls is slowing it down, because I've got the pc setup to control, block, track, and report all web activity for each of their profile accounts on this laptop. I'd love it if there was a certified DNS server on the net, which I could get zone transfers from (as read-only), and then have my own internal DNS server (which I've done before --- but this time with a kid-safe set of addresses/domains) which refers out to the parent organization's kid-safe DNS server. The tracking, reporting, rating, and filtering would work the same, but maybe this would speed things up? (yeah, I know, it would be less secure probably, and more easily circumvented, but, if my kids could actually figure all that out, I think they would find a way regardless to watch porn).

Something I use is OpenDNS. They have the controls that allow you to filter websites based on content.

If you able to set the DNS at your router and put a password on your router' admin account, then your kids won't be able to bypass the DNS and the setting would apply to all computers connected to your home network. Good luck.

Well, give him some time to think about it. I'm sure he'll recall it after a while. In the meantime, find another amusement. There just might be a universal intervention here, that is keeping you away from it. Did you ever consider that one? Try YouTube. There are some smashing vids there as well.
