the way the wire is wrapped is the ONLY difference between them. CAT5 is just a hair slower, but its worth it i think to get CAT5e.

when you send a file using STP, the other computer sends back a very small file saying "thanks, i got that file" when you send a file using UTP, the other computer never replies. upside to UTP is thats what they use to stream audio and video because it is MUCH faster.

STP: Shielded Twisted Pair

UTP: Unshielded Twisted Pair

STP is less suscepible to noise and EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) from nearby power cables, etc.

apparently getting REAL cat5e cable is/was very difficult, since companies were using 26AWG wire and using substandard cable and other nasties.

the specs for cat5e are screen-long. see wikipedia articles.
