Windows XP Ethernet Controller problem.?

There is a problem with a driver on my pc. It's an Ethernet Controller. It says PCI bus 2, device 9, function 0. This devise is not configured correctly. (Code 1). It doesn't list any of the driver's details.

I tried uninstalling it and restarting my pc. When starting it back up, the new found hardware wizard pops up. I try to install the new hardware but it can't find the necessary software. This has left me with no internet connection with that that computer. How do I fix this issue?

Back in Windows, go to the Start menu's Search field, enter device manager , and select Device Manager.

Expand the Network Adapters section.

Right-click the ethernet adapter (hint, it's the one without Wi-Fi or wireless in its name) and select Uninstall.

Confirm by clicking OK.

You should search for the name of your hardware by device ID

It sounds as though you might have deleted some critical files either by accident or deliberately. Have you been trying to clean up C: by simply deleting files? Alternatively, have you been removing software you don't think you need?

The fact that it cannot find the necessary software suggests that it has been removed from the PC by something.

Either you have to track down the XP driver for your Ethernet adapter. If the adapter is built into the motherboard, then you may have to see if the [unnamed] manufacturer has a driver on their website for your [unidentified] model of PC.

When this happens to me I normally make an image backup of C:, then restore a known working backup I made before my problem appeared. If that doesn't work, then I know it's a hardware fault.

When you tried "uninstalling it", how did you do that. Did you actually uninstall the driver in Device Manager, or did you use the Application add/remove option in XP's Control Panel? If you used the latter route, then the software will have gone. If you removed it in Device Manager, then it should normally reinstall on a reboot.

My final suggestion would be either to add a USB to Ethernet adapter or a USB wireless adapter if you can find one with XP drivers. That should allow you to get onto the Internet where you could try one of the driver update sites to get the missing driver reinstalled.

I hope this helps.

If you know the make and model of the Ethernet network adapter you can try downloading the device drivers directly from the manufacturer’s website. If that doesn’t work please make sure the drivers for the man board have been updated to the most recent one for your OS.

Default driver location on your copy of Windows XP is something like

C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\ (device)

Find out the exact name of the maker and model of the controller. Use a working computer to find and download the proper driver for that device. Install driver.

Unless you have the correct installation disk on hand.

It helps to know if the controller is on an add-in card or built onto the motherboard. If on the motherboard, the driver set that came with it will have the proper Ethernet controller.

If all else fails, a new Ethernet card costs a few bucks. Just make sure it lists driver support for XP before you purchase it.

you could always go to a Public Library and download it there.

but if you are running on XP, you really should NOT be going on the internet. it is no longer a secure OS, and should only be used for playing old games...

You don't know why it quit. Software, hardware, configuration or ??? So, look for a new PCI bus Ethernet card with the XP driver disk included.

Any XP machine & the old browser is living on borrowed time to begin with. EBay or Craigs List a used Win7 machine for cheap. Then backup your files and move them to the newer box (there is some decent freeware for doing that and any unique old programs you can't live without).
