Might you be referring to Kerbos?

Kerberos is network security and authentication, but Linux also supports LDAP (on which AD is based) and Linux also has NFS protocol.

I'm sure if you poke around in the System menu on FC and Suse, you'll find some user admin tools. But it would be better to buy a Linux administration book and learn how to do it properly, as most servers will not have a GUI.

i might say getting familar with the command line might take around 3-6 months reckoning on how demanding you artwork on it. Getting solid at a programming language probable around 6 months. Getting experienced at doing extra progressed issues in Linux probable 12-24months (eg. custom Kernel, progressed secure practices suggestions and so on.) you will consistently proceed to study further and further approximately a thank you to get extra desirable at employing Linux yet after around 12-24months you will desire to be an exceptionally experienced Linux person. that's shorter or longer reckoning on how demanding you artwork at it. For a beginning distribution i desire to propose setting up Linux mint or Ubuntu then then you certainly get extra desirable setting up Debian GNU/Linux its lots extra desirable than Linux mint or Ubuntu yet can take a splash longer to get used to.
