any port should do (apart from uplink)

if by 'main internet cable' you mean the ethernet cable your adsl modem comes with - it should be fine in any port. however if you plug it in and the light on the switch doesnt turn on, plug it into the port labelled 'uplink' and it should light up.

most adsl modems come with an inbuilt dhcp server (which hands out ip addresses to devices which request it on the network) - so you shouldnt even need to worry about this - just adding it for clarity.

Are you hooking up to a network at your office?

Depending on your company and what they do, the outcome of you connecting private hardware to their system could be anything from "no problemo" to "you stupid #@$%#@# your fired!!!"

Do not mess with your office network - get the IT department to help you

If this is your home, and you already have a router, then plug the Ethernet cables into any port on the switch in any order. The switch will sort it out.

If this is a home network and you just have a modem, then you must purchase and set up a router.

A switch cannot do the job.

function is to switch the distribution network to more devices. If you switch unmanage, you can menggunakn port anywhere.

But if you need to switch manage to ask the ADMIN, the port can be in use?
