Linux Mint Mate is the Gnome 2 Desktop environment and Cinnamon is the Gnome 3 Desktop environment. These are generally kept up to date and current using alternate repository files that are the PPA Repository File Systems. Linux Mint seems to be a good distribution for many different people. The problem with Ubuntu is it started pushing the KDE Desktop environment and many users don't like KDE. They also messed up pushing the Gnome 3 Desktop environment, but people use what they are comfortable with.

Mint Cinnamon. It's a perfect replacement for Ubuntu. It's still Ubuntu under the covers, but with a sensible modern user interface. http://www.linuxmint.com/

- linux mint 13 xfce

linux mint 13 is long term support, so it wont be end of life until april/may 2017.

xfce is the desktop environment, which is lighter, and might have some lighter applications installed. but you will probably want to install a lighter desktop environment than that, called lxde, into the system, after mint is installed. its as simple as installing an application from the software centre, but you choose the lxde session at login screen.

change swappiness value to 10 also, for better performance:

install "preload"
