How does my Banwidth relate to my download speed?

Hi,
According to speednet my bandwidth averages 3.2mps. When downloading a large fie from a good connection I get about 430kbps.

How do these two figures relate to one another?

The speed test is calculated in Bits. You have a 3.2 MegaBit connection. Downloads are calculated in Bytes though. There are 8 Bits in 1 Byte. 3.2 (your internet speed) divided by 8 (the number of bits in a byte) equals 0.40. 400 KiloBytes is your maximum download speed. So you're getting exactly what you should be.

Downloads are usually in BYTES/second, bandwidth is in bits/second. There are 8 bits in a byte.

So, a download of about 400kBytes/sec is about 400 x 8 = 3.2mbits/sec

You are getting all you can get....



EDIT: I saw Rute's answer after I posted, we are both right. Always remember units, Bytes are capital "B", bits are always lower case "b". Always divide your internet speed tests by 8 to get an approximate estimate of download speed in Bytes/sec.



Note:

Some speed tests can show bytes/sec, a few download utilities may show bits/sec, throwing a lot of assumptions out the window. 95%+ of all bandwidth tests show bits/sec, 95%+ of downloads show bytes/sec. Always check the units....

Bandwidth is what you have avalible, so i pay for a 50 meg line, i never hit 50 meg, the max i get is about 8mbits/sec



there are 1054 kbs per gig..



430 is less than half a meg/sec



this can be caused by poor router configuration, or if ur using wireless and the distance to ur router / signal is weak.



im assuming ur using a torrent client, make sure that this is set up correctly and ur ports are forwarded correctly, (google has the answer to this) on a 3meg connection ur max speed will more than likely be 1054(1meg)



Plus if u are using torrents, try find a file with more seeds to leaches.

I think you are mistaken, bandwidth on speedtest sites usually calculate in Mbit witch is Megabits.



Your download speed is normally measured in KiloBytes. 1 byte = 1024 bits.



3.2 Mbit is around 400 Kbyte.



The easiest way to remember this is to notice the capitlization. Mb = Megabit, MB = Megabyte, Kb = Kilobit, KB = Kilobyte.
