How do you set up a home network with file sharing?

I have in my house a mac and a pc and i am trying to set up file sharing between the two and all day i worked on it (not a nerd ha-ha) but to no avail. I got to the point where each computer recognized each other's presence on the network but when i clicked it (from my PC's point of view) it asked me for a username and a password. what is it asking for? i tried my personal username and personal password and i tried my mac's username and password! can someone help me or send me to a resource that could help me?!

set it up on both computers. Read instructions very simple.
