How do I make a PCI slot on my desktop to install Linksys Wireless G PCI Adapter?

Trying to set up a wireless router. I was told to buy a USB Adapter (Linksys) but reviews show that it disconnects quite often. I purchased the PCI Adapter but I don't have a slot for it - can this be made?

Sorry so confusing, any help would be appreciated!

PCI slots are actually inside your computer. It's quite easy to do this. Look at the back of your PC. See all the ports there (modem, monitor, etc)? Each of those is on a card similar to the one you purchased.



--BEFORE DOING ANYTHING TURN OFF THE COMPUTER--



To do this you are going to have to remove the access panel on your PC. It should just be a couple of screws. Once that is off, you will have to look in and you will see where the other things you looked at earlier are, and there should be an empty slot or 2 there that your new card will fit.



Towards the back of that slot on the PC itself there will be a cover plate that needs to be removed where your antenna will go through the case. It will have one screw in the top of it. remove that plate, and slide your adapter into the slot. then return that screw to the hole to hold it securely in place. No need to make it too tight, just snug.



replace your cover and you are ready to set up the software.



If you feel the least bit uncertain about any of that take it to best buy or somewhere and they can do it for you....for a fee of course.



if you have already tried all that and really do have no more open, you could always remove your modem card and plug it in there as long as all that's on it is the modem. You won't be using that anyway.

Your motherboard doesn't have PCI slots? Or they are all taken by other devices? You could theoretically add an additional PCI slot to an existing motherboard with some PCI slots on it already, but let me tell you - unless you are a hardware JOCK - and a bad a** software STUD at that - forget about it. You would have to share memory space allocated for the 2 devices that would share the same PCI address space, you would have to find room in the chassis to house the new card and connector, you would have to assign a static interupt to both cards in the slot (the parent and child PCI cards, i.e., the child that you made to connect to the parent would need a seperate interrupt as the parent slot.) This would also require an operating system software change to virtually split the interrupt vector of the parent PCI slot - it would have to be done in machine language code to be done correctly.



This is a product that we're talking about, a product that would take a development team a few weeks to realize even a prototype. You could do it, I could do it, but why would either of us try unless we have a startup in mind? Go buy a new motherboard, or remove one of the other devices and use that PCI address, slot the removed device to USB if possible.

A PCI slot is a physical item to which you need to connect the adapter. You can't fabricate a PCI slot out of nothing, because it's hardware, not software.



You should have probably done some research into how PCI works and if you have any free slots.
