Proxy not working?
?

I bought a proxy from proxyfish.com and I have the IP, port, user and pass it gave me. I typed in the IP and port in Internet options > LAN settings. When I try to go online with proxy enabled it says "can't connect to proxy server. Is it because I bought the SOCKS version? I am not sure why this won't work.

On socks (in a browser) a separate application does the tunneling. Ssh is a socks4 proxy, so often you setup a ssh session or use putty (in windows). The session must be set to port forwarding to a local port which the session forwards to a remote port in the session.

There are other socks clients. The point is your browser does not support socks natively, it has the hooks but not the ability to manage the networking part.

Simple proxies don't authenticate, you just point the ip and port to them which is not socks. Internal proxies don't really need to authenticate, but a remote one would probably not just rely on your ip.

Why do you want to use a proxy server? Is it to get around the Terms of Use of sites you want to get to because you are in a country they do not support? Are you trying to commit Copyright Theft by accessing TV shows or films that are not available where you live? Are you trying to disguise your connection to a site because you want download porn or commit potential criminal activity.

If you are online gaming, please be aware that proxy services normally mean extra delays (lag) that might make games fail to work correctly.
