I have a problem with my Dell Latitude D610 computer. I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP and I cannot connect to the internet. It doesn't provide any Network connections opinion (It can't find my wifi). Is there something I am supposed to do? Am I supposed to update it? Right now its Service Pack-2 (2002). I have been searching everywhere and cannot find an answer! Also, Windows Vista was originally installed on it and I had NO problem connecting to the wifi! What's stopping me with Windows XP?

Hi Caleb

My name is Harish and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. You would probably need to install the drivers. Latitude D610 comes with different wireless options- Intel 2915 Mini PCI, Dell Wireless 1350 Mini PCI, Dell Wireless 1450 Mini PCI, Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 Mini PCI, Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Mini PCI. You could download the driver from the dell support page - (Enter the Service tag, Select the Operating system and download the drivers listed under wireless).

To assist you better please mail me the System Service Tag and the name under which the system is registered.

First, you need to upgrade Windows XP to Service Pack 3.

Go to Microsoft's website at

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Where it says :

This installation package is intended for IT professionals and developers downloading and installing on multiple computers on a network. If you're updating just one computer, please visit Windows Update at http://update.microsoft.com .

Ignore that. It will take way too long.

You will be downloading an executable file, and it's a very large file.

It will download just fine.

You will run this file later (while off the Internet) and it will update Windows for you automatically.

You will be downloading this file :

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

You can burn it to a CD or several CDs so you have extra copies.

== the site says this, but to use it your computer has to be connected to the Internet :

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 3 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you.

Once the installation of Service Pack 3 is complete, then you will try to connect to the Internet.

I suggest you first connect to the Internet with a wired Ethernet connection to the router.

Once that is working correctly you can work on the WiFi portion.

And if you return with questions, have the information about the WiFi router in the question. We can give you links to the manufacturer's website for the manuals and FAQ information.

I am not sure about this because I am not an "expert" about computers, but my daughter just recently changed the operating system on her computer too and when she tried to use almost any thing in the system, the drivers where missing. The operating system installed the programming, but non of the drivers. You may need to locate and install the driver for your computer's internet to work properly. She downloaded the driver she needed on another computer and used a portable hard drive to transfer it to the computer that would not connect correctly.

You need to download the appropriate WLAN driver for your model and OS. Go to Dell's Support and Download page and select your laptop and OS.
