Just to clarify if i have broadband with 8mb but i have a router with 54mb. If there was anything like 100mb broadband the router would be the bottle neck?
mbs on a wifi adaptor increase the wifi range?
Im confused because on antennas its measured in dbi

In short 2 ur 1st answer, YES..and a 100Mb connexion would b a fine thing 2!! As for ur second, extending a WLAN range beyond the router limit is only possible by using more than 1 access point(another router).
ANY Mb/s speed given by an ISP should be divided by 8 to get ur actual maximum speed..for example if u have Virgins 20Mb service u will download a max of 2.5MB per sec (thats 2.5 Megabytes per sec not Mb which is MegaBits) There are 8 bits in a byte and Internet speeds are always rated in bits so dividing by 8 is nececssary. 802..11g Wireless will also never give a full 54 Mb connexion as its full of ACKS+SYN packets (for timing and authentication) and having a secure WLAN (WEP WPA,shared keys, etc..which is highly recommended!) makes things worse as authentication for that alone can constantly grab a third of ur bandwidth at the least..802.11n is the fastest nowadays+a good bit more reliable..

Yes, 100Mb broadband would very likely bottleneck a router with a lower network capacity.
You will still find a fair few people still using 512Kbps broadband connections. This is mostly in countries where the infrastructure has not been stepped up to meet requirements for faster connectivity.
Your broadband at 8Mb is what you are paying your provider for and that is the connection speed between your router/modem and the provider.
Your router at 54Mb wireless or 100Mb wired is implying that your local network can operate at 100Mb/s, so traffic between two computers connected to the router will travel at 100Mb/s if connected via cable and "up to" 54Mb if using wireless.
Your wi-fi is dependent on your 802.11 "x" rating.
Link 1 has good info on it.
I download in Mb...2.34Mb to be precise :)
Link 2: DBI explanation - a little greek to me.

thats correct, dbi is a measurement of power, e.g how close you are to something wireless. The limit to 802.11G is 54mb, nothing will change that although with an antenna your more likely to always get that rate as aposed to the drop down points 48mb, 40, 30, 22, 11, 5, 2 (I cant really remember them all off by heart, lol).
I used to own a router which had a 10mb half duplex WAN port and a 100MB LAN port and have 100mb leased line feeding to my house, the most anyone could get was around 9mb, it was dire. I got an 802.11N wireless router with a gig full duplex WAN port and noticed yummy changes :D
There isn't such thing as 100mbps broadband that's available on a consumer level for the most part. But yes, if your broadband was faster than your router, the router would be the bottleneck.
Speed on a wifi adapter doesn't increase the range - the dbi does.

And keep in mind, the difference with megabits per second and megabytes per second are diffrent values for expressing something - sort of like the mph and kph values on your cars speedometer.

Mbs is Megabits per second.
It is the download rate advertised by broadband ISPs and a figure you are never likely to reach.
Upload data rates can be half the download rates which is why a better name for Broadband is ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line), the Asynchronous means the data rates in the two directions are not the same.

improve your information superhighway connection with your ISP. information superhighway boosters do not paintings and is a scam. some issues you are able to attempt to a probability enhance the fee a splash: examine with your ISP to what's the optimal velocity you are able to attain with the plan you presently paying. in the event that they inform you which you will get a speedier velocity then visit the subsequent step according to your question. Many television cable subscribers will visit pot your information superhighway velocity as a results of overload of the cable gadget. If the ISP is a television cable then you definately can whinge to your cable organization which you're actually not getting what you're procuring. i comprehend somebody who had a considerable decelerate as a results of fact his domicile replace into on the top of the block and the cable had to realize too long for the sign to vanish (chemistry and copper wires undertaking... long tale), besides, the cable organization ultimately caved in and spend over $2000 on kit to enhance the sign. Now he gets the terrific sign on the block, from a million.5 mgb to twelve mbs.
