99% of residential internet service is asynchronous, meaning, the download speed is much faster than the upload speed. Find out from your provider what your paying for. You probably have a 10/1 line. 10 Mbps down, and 1 Mbps up.

This is standard practice with home and SOHO Internet connections. My home connection is 50 mbps down / 2 mbps up. There are a number of reasons for this. These are a few of the major ones:

1. Cost. It's cheaper for your ISP to provision an asynchronous connection. These savings are passed on to you. My connection at work is 50 mbps both ways. I pay $50 at home but my employer pays $1,900. (Same ISP, by the way.)

2. Abuse. A slower connection hijacked by a bot does less damage.

3. Hardware requirements. The hardware necessary to support high speed synchronous connections is much more expensive than the cheap home and SOHO equipment. I paid $150 for the cable modem/router at the house. The one that we use at the office was close to $5,000.
