If you're using XP or W2k, it should automatically detect your LAN card (NIC) and most cases install the generic driver for you. You do however have the option to install the manufacturer driver if you want.
XP is very good at detecting new hardware - if it doesn't, typically it's hardware problems. Make sure you the NIC is sitting properly in the slot or change it to a different slot.
Under XP, go to control panel and click on your network connection. You should see under Local Area Connection properties setting under CONNECT USING should tell you the type of NIC that bind to it. Click on CONFIGURE and see if your NIC is working properly or THIS DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY.
This area will tell you whether your NIC is setup properly or not. Then you can take the next steps like putting it into different slot or replacing it as it could be defective.

are you using xp?
if so, try uninstall the device using device manager, then update your bios and install software. Then plug your card in.
if this dont work, try the card in another pc or take it to a shop.
I have had hundreds of problems like this - its because microsoft are only interested in getting software on the shelves to be sold, not to programme efficiantly using opcode.
see if your card is supported by linux and use that, even if its just to test the card. Try downloading knopix live linux, this runs from a boot cd so you wont mess up your xp installation. its like having a brand new computer.

hey.. how did u install the drivers if ur lan card was not detected. seems either there is a problem in your LAN card or slot if its add on lan card. If ur LAN card in onboard then try out a LAN card and insert it in the slot provided on the board. try it in different slot as prb may also be in the slot.

Also, update the bios, if you have another lan card, swap it and see if it works.
