This is a common problem experienced by Windows users worldwide. (Looking at forums across various geographical zones) The problem is due to Microsoft's quirky solution to maintaining network integrity. They do this by forcing your NIC properties to be assigned automatically by default a rogue & useless IP address whenever the situation arises when Microsoft's software cannot get an ip address leased by your router (Which may sometimes be due to NIC failure or a virus re-routing your network) Often the issue is Microsoft and not hardware failure or a virus. In the registry it is possible to add a DWord entry that disables the IPAutoConfiguration function but in Windows 7 this has no effect. Microsoft offer no easy solution to this fcking nightmare because they are lax, careless. I recommend businesses reformat their cdrives, re-load windows 7 and hope that it doesn't re-occur. It is important to make a mirror image of your hard drive after a new install so that you can replace Windows fully whenever this arises, which it will do - frequently

the dos command is ipconfig/all, hovever, of you are getting a conflicting message, that ususally means your ip is the same as another computer on the network, and you either need to change it, or implement dhcp.

you may do the "IPCONFIG" command to check what IP address is detected by your computer or you can do "PING IPADDRESS" command to check which IP adresses is working.
