Story:

I moved to Japan and am using their wonderful fiber optic internet connection. I have internet straight from the provided modem into my computer.

Problem:

I purchased a Wifi router (which I have been able to use in the same setup in the past) but forgot how to get my computer to work with it. When I plug into the Wifi router and try the PPPoE connection it doesn't recognize a valid server. The wifi router is up and running and accessible through wireless devices, there's just nothing going through the signal it is sending.

How can I get my Mac (OS 10.4.11) to work with the router described?
Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!!!

If you are needing to use a modem then it is not fiber but DSL or Cable. Make sure your not mistaking modem with ONT (Optical Network Terminal).

DSL and PPPoE fiber:

The first thing you need to do is go into the modem and disable PPPoE by switching it into bridge mode. Then you set the router to PPPoE and enter your credentials there.

Cable and DHCP fiber(more common):

Set the router to DHCP and it will get all the data it needs to connect. You do not need to touch the modem unless it has MAC lock software. If it does then a reset is all it needs to clear that.

You can access the router configuration screen by typing in the IP of the router into a browser. The defaults are usually written on the bottom of the unit and the manual.

Hi there, I am also in Japan with Flet's Hikari :)

You need to set up the PPPoE connection on the router. You cannot connect using the PPPoE connection on the mac anymore.

I would talk you through it but I dont know the make and model of your router.

Contact me directly if you like and I will help you further...

well you need to more exact whats that router model and are you using windows? no Your using mac right? If you tell me the model You have to type the default ip address of the router into the address and then you can access the router settings, and somewhere should be a pppoe setting to change.
